Import of Bait for Pest Control Treatment is Approved by the Environmental Protection Authority

Previously, the incidences of using hazardous chemical based baits for pest control purposes, caused a lot of harm, not only to the humans and the pets at home, but also to the harmless animals and garden beings within the property. The present day pest control agencies and bait manufacturers have become increasingly conscious of the harm these products bring to the environment and this has boosted the need to use environment friendly chemicals and baits for pest control requirements.

The pest control product manufacturers feel relieved that the application for importing and manufacturing two such pest control substances containing sodium nitrite is approved by the Environmental Protection Authority. This new development has taken place in Sydney and these substances will be used as baits against possums and feral pigs. This approval has indeed revolutionized the field of pest control and pest eradication procedures.

ESN or the encapsulated sodium nitrite is known to be comparatively human friendly and has lesser amount of toxicity than other substances that have been previously approved for usage in pest control purposes. Since, this element breaks down quickly in the body, the chances of other animals experiencing any kind of food poisoning from eating the dead possums is minimized. Moreover, this bait comes with an antidote meant for the humans and the other animals that are not target to the exterminations.

This decision was made by an expert committee dealing in Hazardous Substances and New Organisms. They took this decision once they had studied the risks and dangers that the presently used materials posed to the humans in terms of health. The considerations also included the effect of the hazardous materials on the environment and the animals, thus countless regulations were designed to minimize the negativities in these pest control baits.

The rules include the user of the baits on the pests to receive prior permission from respective authorities. They should also mention the conditions and the places where the baits are to be used. The authorities must also be informed about the ground stations used for baits and how others will be informed of the ongoing operation. Additionally, if anyone is adversely affected by the chemicals, a notification of the same should be made.

The application for the permission should be made firstly to the EPA and secondly, in special cases, the Department of Conservation also needs to be informed, depending on the site where the operation is to be carried out.
